You Are Not Alone in Your Fear of the Gym

The path to a healthy lifestyle may look differently to each person but one thing remains the same, it is never too late or too early to start the journey.

About 5 years ago, my husband and I found ourselves over 50 and overweight. We were especially concerned about our 13-year-old daughter who was also inactive and obese. In desperation, I forced myself to enter a world that terrified me:  The gym. The sounds of weights crashing, exercise class music pounding, and all the really big muscles attached to really big guys in what I referred to as “the jock section” was just overwhelming. The exit door and I became best friends! And then, one day we met Beth; a trainer who turned all of our ideas and perceptions regarding physical fitness upside down. This amazing gal has an incredible talent and gift for reaching out and accepting you no matter where you’re at physically and emotionally, and then helping you step-by-step to start making positive changes for life. Beth helped me to have a confidence and faith in myself that I had never known. Not only did this result in my losing weight, but it was also never more evident than when I broke my leg. Beth truly became my angel of rehab, working with me and pushing me beyond what I ever dared dream possible after experiencing such a badly broken femur. She ultimately – miraculously – helped me to regain full use of my leg: a gift that is still there with me every day in every step that I take.

Beth’s imagination and creativity in working with us was beyond amazing, with equally amazing results. She turned our lives around completely, and I am eternally grateful for the bond and friendship that we formed and continue to share today. I am so grateful for the active lives we are now able to enjoy; I love being able to join in activities with my granddaughters, and to run in a marathon when there was a time I didn’t believe I would ever even walk normally again! Beth is caring, committed, resourceful, dependable, creative, knowledgeable – and one of the best lifetime friends you’ll ever have the privilege of making and being blessed by.

Crysti Bishop Age… Above 50!

My Side of the Story

When Crysti and her family first started working with me I thought I was walking up a never-ending hill. That’s right I felt discouraged and strained not knowing how to connect with people who at first glance seemed so different from me. I was raised in an active family, I could not understand the fear of trying new things and challenging your body.  However, I refused to give up! I knew that the Bishop’s were in need of a serious lifestyle overhaul. As a young trainer I didn’t know how to talk about the touchy subjects of nutrition and health concerns of such a sedentary lifestyle. To be honest with you, Crysti breaking her femur was a blessing in disguise for her family. I believe it was somewhat of a wake-up call for all of them. When Crysti was cleared to begin physical activity she came back to me with a fear that she didn’t have before. That vulnerability is what finally led to change. Some days I left our workouts in tears of frustration, other days I left them wanting to give up because I didn’t think I could ever make a difference. But, most days I finished our training sessions in awe of the wonderful people who were changing right before my eyes.

My own personal journey with the Bishop’s has shaped the way I approach the education of my clients. They helped me realize that improving fitness is about far more than strength training and conditioning. I learned that excepting a change in lifestyle is about being vulnerable, allowing yourself (and your trainer) to see your fears and your insecurities. There was  no certification or college course that prepared me to make my clients comfortable enough to show me their vulnerability. Crysti and her family were not only one of my earliest clients but also have been one of the longest. They have stuck with me while i learned and improved as a trainer and even more so as a friend. I am so blessed to have them as friends and clients. Crysti especially will always challenge me to grow and develop my skills as a trainer and mentor.

Crysti started her reluctant journey towards a healthy lifestyle at …above 50… Her daughter started her fearful journey at the young age of 13. Both were in desperate need of change and both accomplished that change in completely different ways. Crysti as a mother and grandmother had different fears and  reluctances than her daughter, Crysti was also much slower at giving into those fears, seeing them, admitting to them and allowing herself to address them. In the end your age, fears, insecurities, and doubts don’t matter. It doesn’t matter how many twists and turns are in your path, all that matters is that you consistently place one foot in front of the other and keep your eyes and heart open. Your journey to a healthy lifestyle  is your own and it is beautiful and unlike anyone elses. Elizabeth Rizzo-WashburnRizzo21076

Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail

Its February 1st today… how many people are still going strong on their New years resolution?

Statistics show that only about 8% of the population achieve their new years resolution. When I say achieve I mean actually change their lifestyle for good.

Being in the Fitness industry you would think that I love resolutions. NOPE! And, this statistic is one reason why. Not to mention the gyms are always so packed in January that its hard to even get my own workout done. The real reason I don’t like the whole New Year New You business is because I see every day as a New Day! I won’t see another January 31 for a whole year, which means today is the only Feb. 1st that I get this year. So why does everyone wait until New Years to try to better themselves? Maybe a little holiday season remorse?

So if you have already gone back to your old ways… Start again today! And, lets look at some ways to stick to this resolution.

Since I am all about healthy living and fitness lets take a look at the resolution that more than 40% of the population makes. Weight loss/ Self Improvement.

The normal new years resolution goes a little like this…

January 1 Jennifer runs to her local gym in plans to get a year long membership, which is usually upgraded to a 2 year membership due to special deals and convincing sales pitches. Jennifer even goes out and gets a ton of tupperware containers because she is going to try out this meal prep fad that she sees all her friends doing on Facebook. While she is in line at check out she picks up Self Magazine, why not add that to her purchase, she can’t wait to dive into the exercise guide. Week one is going great her alarm goes off at 6:00 every morning she snaps awake… new year new me lets do this. By week 3 of January Jennifer has seen barely any results, her schedule isn’t matching up with her friends and after a long day at work the last thing she wants to do is head to the gym. Not to mention the February Self Magazine hasn’t come out yet and she has no idea what to work.

Jennifer had all the best intentions to change her daily routine. What she didn’t think to change is her mindset. Changing your entire lifestyle in one day is stressful, its and exhausting and scary task. When you expect so much out of yourself its hard to see the positive when there are so many aspects that you fell short on.

So what can you do to make your health and fitness resolutions a reality?

  1. Write down your daily routine right now. Write how it makes you feel? Why you want to change?
  2. Think of what a day in your new healthy life is like? What activities is it filled with? Where is your time spent?
  3. Spend some time planning that 100% healthy day, make sure you have room in your schedule for everything that is planned.
  4. Complete your healthy day! Write down how you feel
  5. Now take a step back!

At this point we have to take a little look at what is realistic. I love this lifestyle, but even when I change up my routine I struggle. It is nearly impossible to change up your entire routine on a flip of a coin. Now that you see all the moving parts and where they will fit in your life concentrate on one a day. It doesn’t even have to be the same one each day. Maybe its portion control, or making it to the gym, Incorporating more protein into your day or having one less drink when your out with your friends. Whatever it is just focus on doing one a day. Success leads to more success. Each night before you go to bed you will be checking in on yourself, what healthy act did I complete today. Eventually without even realizing it you will have woken up had a green shake, gone to the gym after work and even added a new veggie to your dinner that you never realized you LOVED!

Remember just because you missed one day doesn’t mean the whole year is shot… there will always be tomorrow.  Start small, trust yourself, pick different areas in your life to complete a healthy act and focus on your individual successes.

Get going… There won’t be another Feb. 1st for 366 days. (Its leap year!)

A Synopsis of My Journey

Hey everyone. My name is Elizabeth Rizzo-Washburn. This is my first ever blog post so I apologize if it is rough around the edges. I thought it was about time to share my knowledge and experiences with my fellow fitness fanatics and people who overall want to live a healthy energy packed lifestyle.

A little about my educational background and what got me into fitness. I have an Bachelors degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Utah where I competed for 5 years as a collegiate gymnast. I also received my MBA from the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. I am certified in several different fitness areas. Certified Personal Trainer, Life and Weight Management Coach, Core Conditioning Specialist, Fitness/Figure Competition Prep and Sports Nutrition Specialist. In college I struggled with disordered eating, horrible body image, insomnia and constant stress of fitting in. (There will be much more bout all this in future posts)

I am the youngest of two children. My older brother Joe is an amazing man, truly has one of the biggest hearts in the world. At times I feel like we are exact opposites but in reality at the core we have so much in common. I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and my parents are rock stars! Honest! They are extremely supportive, honest, and caring. When I was growing up they worked their asses off to give me every opportunity.

They said “no” far less than they should have and they made sure I always knew that I was… I am loved. As I have gotten older they have changed rolls in my life they are my mentors and some of my closest friends, and every once in awhile they will still act like parents. I only hope I can be half the woman my Mom is she has inspired me more than she will ever know. And my Dad, well there’s not much to say, I am the ultimate daddy’s girl.

Growing up competing gymnastics meant my life was nothing like the average kid. I started gymnastics when I was 2 which is relatively normal for gymnastics. At 7 I was competing, not the everyone gets a participation trophy kind either. We were judged, given scores and ranked. By 9 I was traveling out of state to compete and trying to qualify for Regionals (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky). Starting at 10 years old I had competitions around the whole country and trying to be one of the top 7 gymnasts in my age group in my region (the 5 states from above) So that I could compete at the Junior Olympic Nationals. There is so much I can say about my experience as an athlete competing in USA Gymnastics, but that would probably fill 10 blog posts and will be coming later!

I am now the wife of a professional basketball player and we are currently living in Europe for the basketball season (fall-spring) and spending the summers trying to visit all of our family and friends in the United States. Jason is my rock, my support, my 2nd hardest critic (after myself) and the best person in the world at making me laugh and enjoy life. In all honesty he saved me from the unhealthy road that I was traveling down.

Fairytale (yes I'm standing on something)
Fairytale (yes I’m standing on something)

I am the owner/creator of Rizzo Fitness. Yes I went with my maiden name for my business because of my gymnastics career. I wanted to make it easy for my clients, followers and peers to find information on me. (Beth Rizzo). Currently I train clients one-one online through a mobile app that allows me to give them exercise videos, set the weight and rep schemes and track their results and progress. Coming very soon will be my first 12- week fitness guide! So be on the lookout for that.

My path to happiness and confidence in myself was tough. It has been filled with highs and lows. I know that having a positive body image is something that I need to continue to work at and I do. Just recently I looked into my past and realized that the times when I was the leanest, the most fit and the happiest were the times when my focus was on the capabilities of my body, not how it looked in the mirror. If I was hungry I ate, being hungry meant my body needed fuel, if my body was sore it needed rest, there was no reason to push through a 5 mile run.  At my lows I only cared about what my body looked like especially in a leotard (gymnastics uniform) considering we competed in front of 15,000 people every weekend! If I was hungry I told myself don’t eat you will gain weight, if your hungry you will have to burn fat. (Which is totally not true by the way) And I would never miss a workout… My butt would jiggle way too much if I missed a workout. This backward thinking led to poor athletic performance, poor mental health and an even worse looking body. Now my mantra is MY BODY IS AMAZINGLY CAPABLE. Thats right mine! The only one I will ever get! It is an amazing machine that rises to challenges. I now think of my body like my brain. I wasn’t born with knowledge on human physiology or biomechanics. No, I had to study them and constantly refresh myself on concepts and put those concepts into use, even testing out different theories. If I went to school for Engineering I would know all about  electrical current and conductors. (I think thats engineering)! My body is the same way, I have to allow it to learn, allow it to study, to practice to develop before it will know!

MY BODY IS AMAZINGLY CAPABLE!

I hope you enjoyed this quick insight into my path. I promise I will dive into different sections of my life with more depth in the future! Feel free to request more information on any part of my life. I want to help you find your own path to a healthy life.
